SIU builds field robot to collect soybean disease data

Early field prototype

What happened

The team moved to a ground robot after drone imagery could not capture enough detail beneath leaves affected by frogeye leaf spot. SIU says the robot has GPS, multiple cameras and an autonomous row-following mode, but the researchers are still building the models intended to identify disease and map field hot spots.

Why it matters

Closer imagery could support more targeted crop treatment. The project has not yet reported validated early-detection accuracy, farmer deployment or commercial availability.
