MIT builds varied virtual rooms for robot training

What happened

Researchers from MIT and Toyota Research Institute developed SceneSmith to generate diverse three-dimensional environments. They report more than 1,300 scenes and used generated spaces to evaluate robot action plans in simulation.

Why it matters

Varied simulation can expose a robot to more situations before physical testing. Performance in a generated room does not by itself prove reliable operation in a home or workplace.
