HKUST tests whole-arm touch sensing for robot manipulation
What happened
The EmArm prototype covers its upper and lower arm with more than 71,000 square millimeters of soft optical sensing material. HKUST reports up to 97.9% sensing fidelity under five tested interference conditions and up to 99.8% recognition accuracy for five touch behaviors. In demonstrations, the arm adjusted its posture to support an off-center basketball and reacted to a moving obstacle through touch feedback.
Why it matters
The tests show whole-arm contact sensing connected to motion control, rather than touch detection alone. The reported figures come from controlled experiments; the announcement does not establish reliability in homes, factories or medical settings.
