CMU develops shared software for different robots

Active research
Related research platforms: two PR2 mobile manipulators photographed in 2013. These robots are not the experiment described in this brief.

What happened

Carnegie Mellon researchers describe modular software components that can be reused across robotic arms, humanoids and other platforms. The goal is to reduce the setup work that slows research when a team changes hardware.

Why it matters

Reusable infrastructure may make experiments easier to reproduce and adapt. CMU describes RIO as an active research project rather than a validated universal deployment system.
