What happened

Introduced in the Senate, read twice, and referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

What the bill proposes

The proposal would establish Defense Department policy and review requirements for autonomous weapon systems and AI capabilities. It calls for human judgment, life-cycle testing, legal and cybersecurity review, operator intervention, realistic operational evaluation, and recurring verification for covered systems.

S. 4707 is an introduced bill, not enacted law. Its proposed requirements, prohibitions, working group, and annual reports would not become statutory duties unless Congress passes the measure and the President signs it.
