What happened

S. 4235 was introduced March 26 and referred to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. House companion H.R. 8189 was introduced April 2 and referred to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

What the bill proposes

The companion proposals would restrict executive-agency procurement and operation of unmanned ground vehicle systems made or assembled by covered foreign entities. Their definition includes mobile robots, autonomous patrol systems, remote surveillance vehicles, and humanoid robots.

Neither proposal is law. The texts include limited national-security, research, testing, and cybersecurity exemptions, and the operational restriction would begin one year after enactment.
