What happened

Introduced in the House and referred to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

What the bill proposes

The proposal would require entities that develop or operate advanced artificial intelligence systems in the United States to include a technical capability for a human operator to shut the system down. It would direct the Department of Homeland Security to issue compliance regulations within 90 days after enactment.

This proposal is not law. Its shutdown requirement could affect advanced AI used in physical systems, but the text does not create a separate definition for an advanced artificial intelligence system. Senate companion S. 5417 was introduced and referred to the Commerce Committee on September 16.
